Ontario SPCA lays charges following investigation into horse that fell out of a trailer

IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Prescott, ON (Aug. 8, 2017) – A man from Alfred, Ontario, located about 70 kilometres east of Ottawa, has been charged with animal cruelty under the Ontario SPCA Act following an investigation into an incident in which a horse fell out of a moving livestock trailer.

On July 14, 2017, the accused was travelling east on Highway 401, just east of Prescott, when the horse fell out through an open door at the back of the trailer. The horse – a mare – was injured, but survived. Her injuries were treated by a veterinarian and she is responding well to treatment.

The man has been charged with causing distress to an animal and failing to transport the horse in a manner that ensures its physical safety and general welfare. He is due to appear in a Provincial Offences Court in Brockville on Sept. 13, 2017.

“If you fail to transport an animal in a safe manner that ensures its safety and welfare, there will be consequences under the law,” says Bonnie Bishop, Senior Inspector – Farm Animal Welfare, Ontario SPCA. “Transporting an animal is a serious responsibility and you must take every precaution to ensure that animal is not put in distress.”

To report animal cruelty, call the Ontario SPCA’s province wide animal cruelty hotline at 310-SPCA (7722).
